Mid-Century Modern Makeover: Kitchen & Baths Redo

This homeowner in Aptos, California was not afraid to go bold! She wanted to pay respect to the era of the home and its’ unique character throughout the remodel design which we did with success. The result is a seamless Mid-Century Modern look and feel that supports the homeowner’s personality and lifestyle.

We removed part of an interior wall to open up the kitchen to the view through the existing large windows in the living room and we reconfigured the kitchen layout, moving the fridge, but keeping the kitchen sink and dishwasher location and adding a kitchen island with seating. In order to maximize the space in the primary bath, we added square footage to create the soaking tub alcove within the walk-in shower area. The homeowner selected natural stone countertops, walnut slab cabinets and a geometric mosaic tile backsplash featuring various shades of green, and had vintage lights re-wired for the island pendants in the kitchen. She found a vintage cabinet on Etsy for the primary bath vanity and we selected terrazzo tile for the bath floor, shower walls and tub surround and we used the same natural stone from the kitchen for the tub deck. In the downstairs guest bathroom, she selected a bold blue mosaic tile for the shower walls, a prefabricated vanity, and porcelain floor tile. We worked with existing ceiling beams and tongue and groove ceilings, so that meant we weren’t cutting any new can lights in - so all of the lighting are either surface mounted pendants or sconces!
