Casual Comfort:
A Functional Home Update

This home had been a rental for a while, and the homeowners were ready to move in full-time and make this house their home! The original kitchen was a ‘U-shaped’ layout that felt closed off from the great room, so by removing a couple of walls (and getting some structural engineering!), we were able to use the existing square footage for a more open layout with a large center island. Blue and white cabinets in the kitchen are topped with a concrete look-a-like quartz countertop and white subway tile for a casual, classic look. We also updated the flooring throughout and re-designed the master bath and closet to provide a much more functional (and updated) aesthetic!

Project Details: This project was a kitchen and primary bath remodel and reconfiguration of both spaces. The kitchen was originally a closed off, U-shaped kitchen and by removing two interior, side by side hall closets, we were able to increase the length of the kitchen and get a nice large center island with seating. The cabinets were made custom by a local cabinet maker, the countertops are quartz that mimics concrete, the backsplash is a white subway tile with contrasting grout, and the hardwood floors were refinished throughout the first floor. We didn’t remove any walls in the primary bath, but we did take out a tub and replace it with a larger shower with a low curb, a tile bench, a frameless glass enclosure, grab bars, and a decorative niche; the shower was previously a tiny square, squeezed into the same room as the toilet. We built in custom linen storage in the water closet where the shower used to be, and provided the homeowners with a nice long custom vanity painted dark gray, topped with a quartz countertop and backsplash. The vanity contains his and hers pull out hampers in the middle!
